A Fanatic

“If to be feelingly alive to the sufferings of my fellow creatures is to be a fanatic, I am one of the most incurable fanatics ever permitted to be at large.”

– William Wilberforce, 1759- 1833, the British abolitionist and subject of the upcoming movie Amazing Grace

Eowyn and Coco were baptised by my Dad at Holy Trinity Clapham Common, in May 2005, where the Clapham Sect and William Wilberforce met, whilst my Dad was acting Rector there, and my entire family staying in the rectory, for Sam and Becca’s wedding!!!

Much love to you, dear, dear Rachel,
    Meg

What a wonderful historical connection, Meg! May your girls grow up to be as passionate for justice and freedom as William Wilberforce! With you and Ben as parents, I’m sure they will be.

  3. miranda Says:

Is William talking about slavery or animal welfare?

  4. Rachel Stanton Says:

Good question, Miranda. Wilberforce did help to start the first animal welfare society. I did a little web research and I found the same quote several places but never with the context. It definitely sounds like it could refer to animal welfare. Anybody have more information?
