Faith + Hope = Trust

January 31, 2013

“Faith arises from the personal experience of Jesus as Lord.  Hope is reliance on the promise of Jesus, accompanied by the expectation of fulfillment.  Trust is the winsome wedding of faith and hope.”

– Brennan Manning, Ruthless Trust: The Ragamuffin’s Path to God, 2002

Joy in Trials

January 3, 2011

“Why does God allow some of His deeply loved sons and daughters to go through trials of body and spirit? Because, if they receive that suffering with faith and joy, that supernatural chemical reaction will supercharge the message of His Son’s love and the suffering one will have the privilege of a life impact that will keep echoing and echoing beyond their years.”

A Miracle

November 15, 2010

“A ‘no’ answer has purged sin from my life. It has strengthened my commitment to Him, forced me to depend on grace, bound me with other believers, produced discernment, fostered sensitivity, disciplined my mind, taught me to spend my time wisely, and widened my world beyond what I would have ever dreamed had I never had that accident in 1967.

My affliction has stretched my hope, made me know Christ better, helped me long for truth, led me to repentance of sin, goaded me to give thanks in times of sorrow, increased my faith, and strengthened my character.

Being in this wheelchair has meant knowing Him better and feeling His pleasure every day. If that doesn’t qualify as a miracle in your book, then may I say in all kindness, I prefer my book to yours.”

The Storm

December 5, 2009

“It is quite easy for us to talk and to theorize about faith, but God often puts us in His crucible of affliction to test the purity of our gold and to separate the dross from the metal. How happy we are if the hurricanes that blow across life’s raging sea have the effect of making Jesus more precious to us! It is better to weather the storm with Christ than to sail smooth waters without Him.”

The Faith To Persevere

October 20, 2009

“Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. And even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him. Disaster occurs in your life when you lack the mental composure that comes from establishing yourself on the eternal truth that God is holy love. Faith is the supreme effort of your life – throwing yourself with abandon and total confidence on God.”

– Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

Desperate Faith

June 24, 2009

“Desperation is better than despair. Remember, our faith did not create our desperate days.  Faith’s work is to sustain us through those days and to solve them.  Yet the only alternative to desperate faith is despair.  Faith holds on and prevails.”

– S. Chadwick, Streams in the Desert

The Early Church on Violence

January 21, 2007

“We who were filled with war, and mutual slaughter, and every wickedness, have each through the whole earth changed our warlike weapons—our swords into ploughshares, and our spears into implements of tillage—and we cultivate piety, righteousness, philanthropy, faith, and hope, which we have from the Father Himself through Him who was crucified.” – Justin Martyr (100-165 AD), Dialogue with Trypho 110

“We who formerly used to murder one another do not only now refrain from making war upon our enemies, but also, that we may not lie nor deceive our examiners, willingly die confessing Christ.” – Justin Martyr (100 – 165 AD), Apology 1.39

“For it is not in war, but in peace, that we are trained.”  – Clement of Alexandria (150-aprox 211 AD), The Instructor 1.12
