On Facing a Plague

May 20, 2020

“What a grandeur of spirit it is to struggle with all the powers of an unshaken mind against so many onsets of devastation and death! What sublimity, to stand erect amid the desolation of the human race, and not to lie prostrate with those who have no hope in God; but rather to rejoice, and to embrace the benefit of the occasion; that in thus bravely showing forth our faith, and by suffering endured, going forward to Christ by the narrow way that Christ trod, we may receive the reward of His life and faith according to His own judgment!”

– Cyprian of Carthage (200-258), De Mortalitate

The Solid Rock

November 1, 2019

“When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.”

– Edward Mote (1797-1874)

A Song for the Suffering

March 8, 2016

This beautiful song by Shane and Shane features a sermon excerpt by John Piper. I’m moved to tears every time I listen.

“Though you slay me
Yet I will praise you
Though you take from me
I will bless your name
Though you ruin me
Still I will worship
Sing a song to the one who’s all I need”

For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people.
And I will hope in your name, for your name is good.”

– Psalm 52:8-9

Faith + Hope = Trust

January 31, 2013

“Faith arises from the personal experience of Jesus as Lord.  Hope is reliance on the promise of Jesus, accompanied by the expectation of fulfillment.  Trust is the winsome wedding of faith and hope.”

– Brennan Manning, Ruthless Trust: The Ragamuffin’s Path to God, 2002

Hope

A Miracle

November 15, 2010

“A ‘no’ answer has purged sin from my life. It has strengthened my commitment to Him, forced me to depend on grace, bound me with other believers, produced discernment, fostered sensitivity, disciplined my mind, taught me to spend my time wisely, and widened my world beyond what I would have ever dreamed had I never had that accident in 1967.

My affliction has stretched my hope, made me know Christ better, helped me long for truth, led me to repentance of sin, goaded me to give thanks in times of sorrow, increased my faith, and strengthened my character.

Being in this wheelchair has meant knowing Him better and feeling His pleasure every day. If that doesn’t qualify as a miracle in your book, then may I say in all kindness, I prefer my book to yours.”

– Joni Eareckson Tada, A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God’s Sovereignty, 2010
